Mobile Roaming

Mobile Roaming happens when a mobile phone subscription is being serviced by a network other than the network to which the subscription was created.

The basic definition of Mobile Roaming was formulated when the standards for mobile telephony (GSM) were laid down, and defines Mobile Roaming as "the ability for a cellular customer to automatically make and receive voice calls, send and receive data, or access other services, including home data services, when travelling outside the geographical coverage area of the home network, by means of using a visited network."

For most subscribers this means that Mobile Roaming is experienced when travelling, and using the mobile telephone abroad.

The technical aspects of Mobile Roaming are many and complicated, and not dealt with in depth here. While roaming may be understood from a technical perspective the most common meaning of the word is the ability to access services provided by another network than the network to which the service subscription was created.

16 July 2008, Viviane Reading ( European Commision) Advises Mobile Operators to cut Roaming Charges on Text messages and Data Charges, "This evidence shows that text and data roaming prices have remained too high compared to the actual costs incurred by operators"

In response the roaming advisor says: "As we have said for a long time on Roaming Advisor, it's still important to check mobile roaming charges before going abroad and with Roaming Solution Providers offering Data soon, there is a lot of savings to be made using a dedicated Roaming Sim Card. We fear that consumers could be mislead with the new data roaming tariff, as they were with the roaming tariff's introduced last year, it's still very expensive to roam if you are not using a roaming sim card, we hope that consumers and businesses will look at alternatives to using their operators when roaming"
